Sparking Joy marks the first time Kondo has applied her method outside of the home on television (in fact, the series tagline is 'The home was just the beginning'). This can be applied to other areas in your life, to lead to helping you make bigger changes.” 'You are clarifying your values in life and you're able to better answer the question of how you want to work how you want to connect to the people in your life. “With the KonMari method, the key is to choose what sparks joy, and when you continue this process over and over again you get you gradually get to see what is important to you,' Kondo says. In Sparking Joy, Kondo moves the emphasis away from the 'tidying up' portion of her KonMari method and onto-you guessed it-the 'sparking joy.' There's decluttering, sure, but the majority of the show's focus isn't on throwing things out, but on reorganizing-things, yes, but also relationships, lifestyles, and routines-in order to create a more joyful life.

'I think a lot of people have realized how important it is that our home is a place that brings us comfort and joy,' says Kondo, speaking to House Beautiful through a translator. On the heels of a year where people spent more time than ever at home, around their things, it's an attitude that resonates more than ever.

'What I’ve learned through my work is that objects are not just objects, but companions,' she says in a scene from the second episode. It's an attitude that's reflected throughout the organizing maven's latest endeavor, Sparking Joy, a Netflix original debuting next week, which also offers a peek into Kondo's own life at home with her husband and daughter.

As Kondo sees it though, this couldn't be further from the truth: 'The end goal of tidying,' she tells House Beautiful, is not to create a minimalist interior, but rather 'to learn how to cherish each thing in your life.' She's also earned somewhat of a reputation-especially among avowed maximalists of which I, admittedly, am one-as a no-nonsense enemy of the inessential, set on ridding homes of all clutter, yes, but also any ornamentation. In the 10 years since her breakout book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Kondo has skyrocketed to international fame with a Netflix series, collection for The Container Store, and two subsequent books. If there's one misunderstanding Marie Kondo would like to dispel, it's the notion that she wants you to throw away all of your stuff.
